    Album

  • The film featured many first-timers. It was composer A.R. Rahman's first film as a producer under his banner Y.M. Movies. He also wrote its story. It was the first feature film of Vishwesh Krishnamurthy, who had directed advertisements and documentaries in the past. Krishnamurthy had also been the frontman of the heavy metal band Scribe and had sung the Hindi film song "Aami Shotti Bolchi" ("Kahaani", 2012). This was also the Hindi debut film of its lead actors Ehan Bhat and Edilsy Vargas. Born in the Dominican Republic, Vargas had worked previously in Spanish and English language films.[1]
  • The film was a long time in the making. A.R. Rahman first expressed his desire to make a film in 2011. In 2013, he announced that the film would be jointly produced by Eros International and his banner Y.M. Movies. It was announced that Rahman himself had conceived the film and written its story. During the film's promotion in 2021, Rahman stated in interviews that he had run his ideas by various people, including Mani Ratnam, and they had encouraged him to move forward with them. In 2015, it was reported that the film would be directed by Vishwesh Krishnamurthy and that its casting was in progress. Rahman revealed later that he had considered directing the film but eventually concluded that he did not have the time for it. Rahman had initially planned to title the film "100 Songs" inspired by a film he was working on at the time, "The Hundred-Foot Journey" (2014). He changed it later since he felt that their similar names could confuse viewers. When Eros exited the film at one point, Rahman brought Canada's Ideal Entertainment on board in their place. It was expected that the film would be released in 2018 but it got delayed and finally premiered at the Busan International Film Festival in October 2019. Its soundtrack album was published in March 2020, but plans for its theatrical release were upset by the breakout of the COVID pandemic. After waiting for about a year, it was announced that the film would be released in theatres on April 16, 2021. When asked about his decision to release the film at a time when COVID cases were on the rise, Rahman said that he wanted his audience to experience the film in theatres. Dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu were also released. The film was released on streaming platforms on May 21, 2021.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]
  • The film featured several musicians including Ranjit Barot, Rahul Ram, Chaitanya Shama aka SlowCheeta, and Kalyan Baruah in acting roles. The lines of the film's heroine Edilsy Vargas were voiced over by singer Sasha Tirupati, who also sang songs for her character. Playback singer Udit Narayan provided the narration in the film's opening credits.
  • The film's director Vishwesh Krishnamurthy had initially short-listed the names of three Pakistani actors for the film's lead role. However, A.R. Rahman had shot down the idea fearing deteriorating relations between India and Pakistan and its impact on the film. This was done even before the ban on Pakistani artists imposed by the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association after the 2016 Uri attack in which four terrorists killed 19 Indian soldiers and injured many more.[12]
  • The film's soundtrack album was said to be the first in the Dolby Atmos Music format.[13]
  • A.R. Rahman dedicated the film to his mother Kareema Begum who died in December 2020, a few months before its theatrical release.

  • Sai Shirdi Sai - The song was originally released as a single in 2019. It was included in the film's soundtrack only later.
  • Veere Kadh De - This was the debut Hindi film song of singers Sarthak Kalyani and Swagat Rathod. They had participated previously in the YouTube talent show "ARRived" (2018) that had A.R. Rahman as the main judge.
