This was the directorial debut of Govind Nihalani, who had previously worked as a cinematographer in many Shyam Benegal films. The film won several awards including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. It was also the first Hindi film of music director Ajit Verman.
This was Om Puri's breakthrough film. He had previously appeared in minor roles in several films. He is particularly remembered for the film's terrifying climax in which he lets out a long, heart-rending scream after remaining silent for most of the film. Om Puri won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in this film.
The plot of this film was inspired by a real-life newspaper report.
