Trivia

    Album

  • The film was based on Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's historical Bengali novel of the same title, first published in 1882. The opening credits acknowledged the adaptation as "Rishi Bankimchandra's Immortal Classic". The novel was set against the backdrop of the Sanyasi Rebellion of 1770-1777, considered an early chapter in India's freedom struggle against British rule. Bankim Chandra used his poem "Vande Mataram", originally written in 1876, in this novel. The film's tribute to the rebels in the opening credits read "Dedicated to those who died with Bande Mataram on their lips". The first two verses of the poem were adopted as India's National Song in 1950. Hemant Kumar set the poem to music in two songs in the film - a duet sung by him and Lata Mangeshkar and a solo sung by him.
  • This was Hemanta Mukherjee's debut as a music director in Hindi films. It was Sashadhar Mukerji, the founder of the film's production house, Filmistan, who gave him the screen name Hemant Kumar since it would be easier for Hindi film audiences to remember. The music director started feeling homesick after his Bombay debut and wanted to return to Calcutta. However, Mukerji told him that he would not let him go back till he had given him a hit musical score. Hemant Kumar persevered and eventually delivered Mukerji the hit music of "Nagin" (1954).[1][2]
  • Hemant Kumar first met music director Ravi Shankar Sharma, popularly known as Ravi, during the recording of this film's songs. Ravi was one of the film's chorus singers. Impressed by him, Hemant Kumar asked him to assist him in his future films. It was Hemant Kumar who mentored Ravi and encouraged him to become an independent music director. Ravi received his first music director credit under Hemant Kumar for the famous "Been Music" ("Nagin", 1954) and debuted independently in "Vachan" (1955).[3][4][5]
