Trivia

    Album

  • This was one of the four films directed by Manmohan Desai that were released in 1977. The other three films were "Chacha Bhatija" (1977), "Dharam-Veer" (1977) and "Parvarish" (1977). Delayed by the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975, these films came three years after Desai's last film "Roti" (1974). While all four films were hits, this film became a cult classic and established Manmohan Desai as Bollywood's premier film director.[1][2][3][4]
  • This was the first film produced by Manmohan Desai's M.K.D. Films banner.
  • Amitabh Bachchan's character in this film was appreciated by fans so much that he came to be known as Anthony during this period. In a scene in "Gol Maal" (1979), where Amitabh Bachchan plays himself, a fan asks him for an autograph signed with "from Anthony bhai".[5][MR12]
  • The success of this film triggered remakes and inspired takes in various languages. The Tamil film "Shankar Salim Simon" (1978) borrowed the idea of its lead characters coming from different religions. The Telugu film "Ram Robert Rahim" (1980) was a direct remake, and the Malayalam film "John Jaffer Janardhanan" (1982) was an adaptation. There was even a Punjabi film released in Pakistan in 1978 with a slightly modified title but a different plot.
  • The scene in this film introducing Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh's characters has a blooper. In this scene, instead of addressing her by her character's name Salma, Rishi Kapoor addressed Neetu Singh by her real name.
  • The famous scene in this film in which Amitabh Bachchan applied band-aids on a mirror was shot in director Manmohan Desai's absence. Desai was busy directing scenes of "Parvarish" (1977) at the time on another floor of the same studio. According to Kader Khan, who wrote the film's dialogues, this scene was directed by him. However, according to Amitabh Bachchan, the scene was mostly improvised by him and shot by the film's Associate Director Anil Nagrath in one take. According to yet another story behind this scene - this one Shabana Azmi's - Amitabh had to enact this scene fourteen times because of some issues with the camera.[6][7][8][9]
  • Manmohan Desai pleaded with Shabana Azmi to act in this film saying that her role was not substantial, but he needed an actress to pair with Vinod Khanna to keep him happy! Shabana was charmed by Desai's candour and laughingly agreed to work in the film.[10]
  • The villains in the film "Andhaa Kaanoon" (1983), played by Prem Chopra, Danny Denzongpa and Pran, were named after the lead characters of this film.[11]
  • Salim - Javed, who had been advocates for Amitabh Bachchan since "Zanjeer" (1973), had introduced the actor to Manmohan Desai during one of the writing sessions for "Chacha Bhatija" (1977). Desai had been unimpressed and was reportedly rude to Bachchan. The writers had told Desai that a day would come when he would have no choice but to work with Amitabh. Their prediction came true with this film. So impressed was Desai with Amitabh during the making of the film, that he told the actor that he would feature him in every future film of his till he turned him down. True to his word, every film Manmohan Desai directed after this film featured Amitabh Bachchan in a lead role. Their association ended with Desai's last film as a director, "Gangaa Jamunaa Saraswathi" (1988).[12][13][14][MR34]
  • Laxmikant - Pyarelal won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for four consecutive years from 1977 to 1980, including their Filmfare Award for this film. The other three films they won the Filmfare Award for during this period were "Satyam Shivam Sundaram" (1978), "Sargam" (1979) and "Karz" (1980).[15][16][17]

    Song

  • Humko Tumse Ho Gaya Hai Pyar - This is the only Hindi film song featuring the four legendary singers Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. It was also the only song sung by Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi and Mukesh.
  • Taiyab Ali Pyar Ka Dushman - This song was re-created for the Hindi film "Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara!" (2013). The re-created version used this song's mukhda but the rest of it was original.[18]
  • Parda Hai Parda - Laxmikant - Pyarelal had approached Kishore Kumar to sing the one line sung by Amitabh Bachchan's character in this song. Kishore was not keen on singing just one line and quoted a high price to discourage the music directors, who then settled for his son, Amit Kumar, at a much lower fee. However, Amit Kumar was not officially credited in the song.
  • My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves - The Anthony Gonsalves in the title of this song was a real person. He was a music arranger, perhaps Bollywood's first, and Pyarelal's mentor. The song was a tribute to him. In fact, Amitabh's character in this film was initially named Anthony Fernandes. It was on Pyarelal's request that Desai agreed to change his name.[19]
  • My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves - One of the highlights of this song was Amitabh Bachchan's comic delivery of nonsensical lines in English. One of these lines - "You see the whole country of the system is juxtaposition by the haemoglobin in the atmosphere because you are a sophisticated rhetorician intoxicated by the exuberance of your own verbosity." - was adapted from an address by the British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli in 1878 targetting his political opponent William Ewart Gladstone.
  • My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves - A 2008 film directed by E. Niwas was named after the title of this song.[20]
