• This was the debut Hindi film of director Shyam Benegal as well as of actors Shabana Azmi, Anant Nag and Priya Tendulkar.
• Shyam Benegal had written the story of this film based on real-life events when he was still in college. His initial vision was to make this film in Telugu, the language of the region in which the story was set. Benegal had failed to find a producer for the film for more than a decade when he finally came across Mohan Bijlani and Freni Variava of Blaze Films, India's largest distributors of advertising films at the time. Bijlani and Variava convinced Benegal to make the film in the Dakhani language - an Urdu-based dialect spoken in Andhra Pradesh - and agreed to produce the film.[1]
