Trivia

    Album

  • Hrishikesh Mukherjee dedicated the film to his mentor Bimal Roy, who passed away earlier that year. The dedication simply read "Dedicated to Bimal Da" and appeared after the director's credit.
  • This was the first of the two films Hrishikesh Mukherjee made in quick succession that featured Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore in lead roles, had dialogues written by Rajinder Singh Bedi, and featured Kaifi Azmi's song lyrics. The second film was "Satyakam" (1969).[1]
  • This film was referenced in another film by Hrishikesh Mukherjee - "Guddi" (1971). In a scene in "Guddi" (1971), Jaya Bhaduri's character was seen with a booklet of this film. The back cover of the booklet had an advertisement for yet another film by Hrishikesh Mukherjee - "Buddha Mil Gaya" (1971).[2][3]
  • Hrishikesh Mukherjee used the real-life story of his cousin for the complex father-daughter relationship enacted by Tarun Bose and Sharmila Tagore in the film. Scandalised by Sharmila Tagore's bikini cover in a magazine, some people had advised Mukherjee to cast Nutan instead of her. The director stuck with Sharmila since she had the expressive eyes he wanted in the film's titular character. However, Bose wasn't Mukherjee's first choice. The filmmaker had cast him in the father's role only after Ashok Kumar and Abhi Bhattacharya had turned it down.[4]

    Song

  • Dheere Dheere Machal Ae Dil-E-Beqarar - Kaifi Azmi adapted Sahir Ludhianvi's lines "Abhi saanson ki khushboo hawaon mein hai / Abhi qadmon ki aahat fazaaon mein hai" in the song "Aankh Khulte Hi Tum" ("Munimji", 1955) to write "Uske daaman ki khushboo hawaon mein hai / Uske qadmon ki aahat fazaaon mein hai" for the first antara of this song.[5]
  • Kuch Dil Ne Kaha Kuch Bhi Nahin - Sharmila Tagore had turned up for the song's shoot in Mahabaleshwar at 5 am in full makeup and with her hair styled in a bouffant. Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee disapproved of the bouffant and told the actress that it didn't go with her character. He gave in when she insisted on keeping it. Later, however, Tagore regretted her appearance in the song and wished that she had listened to the director.[6]
  • Kuch Dil Ne Kaha Kuch Bhi Nahin - Sumant Raj played the flute solos in this song.[7]
  • Kyon Mujhe Itni Khushi De Di - Manohari Singh played the saxophone solos in the song and Goody Seervai played the accordion.[8]
  • Ya Dil Ki Suno Duniyawalo - Hemant Kumar reused the tune of the song "Sahil Ki Taraf Kashti Le Chal" ("Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam", 1962) for this song. The original song was recorded but did not make it to the movie.[9]
  • Ya Dil Ki Suno Duniyawalo - It is said that Dharmendra was concerned that Hemant Kumar's voice would not suit him in this song.[10]
