Trivia

    Album

  • This was the second Sanjay Leela Bhansali film in which Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone worked together. They had worked in "Ram-Leela" (2013) previously and followed it up with "Padmaavat" (2018). The actors were romantically involved during the film's making and got married in 2018.[1][2]
  • The film was an adaptation of the Marathi historical fictional novel "Rau" (1972) written by N.S. Inamdar. Screenwriter Prakash R. Kapadia had written the script's initial version 12 years ago and had to revise it to suit evolving audience preferences. Kapadia and Bhansali consulted with historian Ninad Bedekar for the screenplay adaptation of "Rau".[3]
  • Sanjay Leela Bhansali had conceived the idea for this film even before his debut film, "Khamoshi - The Musical" (1996). He had tried to initiate work on the film several times in the following years but it had not gone anywhere. Bhansali had considered various actors for the film at different points in time. He had initially planned to cast Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai in the film. In 2005, he had considered casting Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor for the two female leads. Finally, before landing on Ranveer Singh for the film's male lead, he had approached Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, and Ajay Devgan, who had all turned him down. The film went from being considered a non-starter to becoming one of the most expensive as well as highest-grossing films of all time.[4]
  • This was one of the films which Sanjay Leela Bhansali dedicated to his parents and to his pet dog Lady Popo. He dedicated "Ram-Leela" (2013) and "Padmaavat" (2018) to them as well.[5][6]

    Song

  • Deewani Mastani - This was the first song Sanjay Leela Bhansali composed for the film - about 12 years before its release. He composed the tune around the same time he conceived the idea for the film.[7]
  • Deewani Mastani - This was the debut Hindi film song of Mujtaba Aziz Nazan, the son of the famous qawwal Aziz Nazan.
  • Mohe Rang Do Laal - Sanjay Leela Bhansali acknowledged that the film was heavily inspired by K. Asif's "Mughal-E-Azam" (1960). He took the concept of Sheesh Mahal, the palace of mirrors, from "Mughal-E-Azam" (1960) and built an elaborate Aaina Mahal for this film. Additionally, this song was directly inspired by "Mohe Panghat Pe Nandlal" ("Mughal-E-Azam", 1960).[8][9][10]
  • Albela Sajan Aayo Ri - Sanjay Leela Bhansali took a classical bandish composed by the Mughal court musician Manarang in Raag Ahir Bhairav and transformed it into Raag Bhoopali for this song. He used a Raag Bhoopali rendition by Kishori Amonkar as an inspiration for the song. Bhansali had used the same Ahir Bhairav composition many years earlier in his film "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" (1999).[11][12][13]
