Trivia

    Album

  • This was a biopic of athlete Milkha Singh who was active in the 1950s and the 1960s. He was a gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games and represented India in three Olympic Games.
  • The idea for this film came from Milkha Singh's autobiography "The Race of My Life" which he co-wrote with his daughter Sonia Sanwalka. The athlete charged the filmmakers one rupee for the rights to make a biopic based on his life. The filmmakers presented him with a rupee note that was printed in 1958, the year he won independent India's first gold medal in an international athletic event. A few months after the film's release, Milkha Singh said that part of his deal with the filmmakers was that they would give ten percent of the film's profits to the Milkha Singh Charity Trust, an organisation that assisted sportspersons and their families.[1][2][3]
  • Shankar Mahadevan's son Siddharth had two solo songs in the film. After debuting in a group song in "Bunty Aur Babli" (2005), this was his first significant work as a playback singer.[4]
  • Pakistani singer and actress Meesha Shafi debuted as an actor in this Hindi film.
  • The Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) got embroiled in a controversy over its 'U' rating for the film despite the kissing scenes in it. An activist, Teena Sharma, blamed the CBFC for the rising level of vulgarity in films and filed a PIL demanding a CBI inquiry into the working of the board. Sharma claimed that Javed Akhtar had told her that "he would make all the kissing scenes go with a U certificate". Even members of the Censor Board criticised the body's functioning and accused CEO Pankaja Thakur of colluding with filmmakers for liberal ratings.[5][6]
  • There were media reports that Sonam Kapoor charged a fee of only Rs. 11 for the film.

    Song

  • Maston Ka Jhund - Some Hindu groups objected to what they believed was an inappropriate reference to the ritual of "havan" in this song.[7]
  • Slow Motion Angreza - The film's director Rakesh Omprakash Mehra and lyricist Prasoon Joshi sang for the chorus in this song. Loy Mendonsa of Shankar - Ehsaan - Loy appeared on screen in the song and sang the English lines in it.
