Trivia

    Album

  • The title of this film was Shammi Kapoor's idea. It was originally supposed to be the title of a film he was supposed to do with producer, director Subodh Mukherjee. However, the project fell through when Subodh Mukherjee declined to pay Shammi Kapoor the high fee he had demanded after the success of "Junglee" (1961). Shammi Kapoor had then decided to do a film with Manmohan Desai instead.[1][MR15]
  • The film opened with the text of the Hindi translation of a famous quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln - "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time".
  • This was a rare film in which three singers sang for Shammi Kapoor - Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, and the singer he was normally associated with, Mohammed Rafi.
  • The Desai brothers, Subhash and Manmohan, had envisaged the film as a small-budget, black & white film. However, Saira Banu's "Junglee" (1961) became a big hit during its making, and the actress and her mother demanded that this film be shot in Technicolor. They even enlisted Dilip Kumar's help to put pressure on the Desais to meet their demand. This resulted in the film getting delayed and the Desais incurring heavy financial losses. Manmohan Desai's previous experience with Dilip Kumar - he blamed Kumar for driving his father, producer Kikubhai Desai, to bankruptcy - caused him to resent the actor even more. He consequently didn't cast Kumar in any of his films.[2][3]

    Song

  • Ae Dil Ab Kahin Le Ja - The song's mukhda used the tune of the jazz instrumental music piece "Petite Fleur" composed and recorded by the American saxophonist Sidney Bechet in 1952. A version of this composition recorded as a clarinet solo by Chris Barber's Jazz Band became an international hit in 1959.[4]
