The film was certified in October 2014. It was shown in various film festivals over the next two years but could not find distributors for a theatrical release. The film's take on ideological divisions and student politics was considered too controversial for a commercial release. It was reported that the Barjatyas of Rajshri Productions bailed out director Vivek Agnihotri eventually and the film was released in May 2016. The film's screening at various colleges around India was met with protests for its critical depiction of leftist influences in academia. In 2018, Agnihotri wrote a book titled "Urban Naxals" describing his experience in the making of this film.[1][2][3]
