Trivia

    Album

  • Encouraged by the success of "Rajnigandha" (1974), Basu Chatterjee repeated its leading pair Amol Palekar and Vidya Sinha in this film.[1]
  • The audio records of this film were issued in 1975 but the film was released in 1976.
  • Writer Kamleshwar provided the commentary in the beginning and the end of this film.
  • This film was an adaptation of the British comedy "School for Scoundrels" (1960).
  • Amitabh Bachchan, who at the time was working on another film by producer B.R. Chopra, "Zameer" (1974), appeared in this film in a cameo role playing himself. The bus stand that was featured in several scenes in this film had a large poster of "Zameer" (1974) on display.[2]
  • This was the first film that B.R. Chopra produced but which he or a member of his family did not direct. Since his debut as a producer in "Afsana" (1951), every film of his was directed by himself, his brother Yash Chopra or his son Ravi Chopra. It was also his first film in almost two decades for which Sahir Ludhianvi was not the lyricist. Not considering films with no songs, before this film, Sahir Ludhianvi had written the lyrics for every film produced by B.R. Films since "Naya Daur" (1957).[3][4]

    Song

  • Na Jaane Kyun Hota Hai Ye - Salil Chowdhury had originally composed the tune of this song for the Bengali non-film song "Pagol Hawa" (1962), sung by Jatileswar Mukherjee. He recorded "Pagol Hawa" again in 1981 in Subir Sen's voice.
  • Yeh Din Kya Aaye Lage Phool Hansne - Pleased with his National Film Award for the song "Kai Baar Yun Bhi Dekha Hai" ("Rajnigandha", 1974), Mukesh sang this song for Basu Chatterjee without taking a fee.[5]
  • Yeh Din Kya Aaye Lage Phool Hansne - Salil Chowdhury reused the tune of this song for the Bengali non-film song "Phagunke Daklam" (1981), sung by Arundhati Holme Chowdhury.[6]
  • Jaaneman Jaaneman Tere Do Nayan - This was Malayalam film singer Yesudas's first Hindi film song. He had recorded songs for the shelved film "Anand Mahal" (1977) earlier, but its audio records were released two years after this film.[7]
  • Jaaneman Jaaneman Tere Do Nayan - Part of this song was filmed on Dharmendra and Hema Malini, but they were not credited for their cameo appearance. They were featured in a fictitious film Amol Palekar's character was watching in the film. Actors Sujit Kumar and Manmohan also had uncredited cameos in this song.
  • Jaaneman Jaaneman Tere Do Nayan - Salil Chowdhury had originally composed the tune of this song for the Bengali non-film song "Prajapati Prajapati" (1972), sung by Sabita Chowdhury. He had also used the tune of this song earlier for the Telugu film song "Tikku Taaku" ("Chairman Chalamayya", 1974), sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam and P. Susheela.[8][9]
