Trivia

    Album

  • This was Waheeda Rehman's debut Hindi film. She had acted in Telugu and Tamil films prior to this. Guru Dutt, who produced this film, met with her after a distributor told him about the buzz she had created with her performance in the Telugu film song "Eruvaaka Saagaroranno Chinnanna" ("Rojulu Marayi", 1955). He cast her in this film and "Pyaasa" (1957) shortly after that. Waheeda's onboarding wasn't smooth. She refused to adopt a screen name as suggested by director Raj Khosla and Guru Dutt. Additionally, she asked for a term in her contract that gave her the right to refuse to wear costumes that she deemed inappropriate. The filmmakers agreed to her terms but the newcomer's assertiveness made an unfavourable impression on Khosla. He advised Dutt against casting her in "Pyaasa" (1957) and eventually fell out with her over a spat during the making of "Solva Saal" (1958).[1][2][3][4]
  • The film had a scene in which a game of musical chairs was played. The music, which was played on a harmonium, was based on the Hindi film songs "Ichak Dana Beechak Dana" ("Shree 420", 1955), "Teri Duniya Mein Jeene Se" ("House No. 44", 1955), and "Jeevan Ke Safar Mein Raahi" ("Munimji", 1955).[5][6][7]
  • This was the first film Guru Dutt produced but did not direct. For this film, he handed over the reins to Raj Khosla who had worked as an assistant director to him in his previous films - "Baazi" (1951), "Jaal" (1952), "Baaz" (1953) and "Aar Paar" (1954).[8][9][10][11]

    Song

  • Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Jeena Yahan) - The tune of this song's mukhda was based on the American folk song "Oh My Darling Clementine".[MR4]
  • Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Jeena Yahan) - This song may have inspired the title of a 2016 film by Karan Johar.[12]
  • O Le Ke Pehla Pehla Pyar - I - The sequence leading up to this song depicted Dev Anand's character appearing to follow the character played by Shakila, starting at a bus stop. Both of them boarded the same bus and got off at the Worli Seaface. The background music theme used throughout this sequence was based on the tune of the song "Mohabbat Kar Lo Jee Bhar Lo" ("Aar Paar", 1954). Following this song, it is revealed that Dev Anand was, in fact, going to Shakila's house on official business - to meet her father, a Superintendent of Police. Similar sequences - of the heroine suspecting the hero of following her and finding out later that both had the same destination - were used in other films as well. One, featuring Dev Anand and Nanda, was used in the opening of "Teen Devian" (1965) and another, featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi Chatterjee, was the first scene in "Manzil" (1977). This theme had a real-life precedent in the film industry. While on her way to the recording studio for "Ziddi" (1948), Lata Mangeshkar suspected a man of following her. Little did she know that the man was Kishore Kumar, on his way to the same studio to record his first-ever duet with her. Her concerns were put to ease when music director Khemchand Prakash introduced them at the studio.[13][14][15][16][MR7]
  • O Le Ke Pehla Pehla Pyar - I - The tune of this song was plagiarised by Ghantasala for the Telugu film song "Oho Basthi Dorasaani" ("Abhimanam", 1960).[17]
  • Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishara Ho Gaya - The violin solo in this song may have been inspired by a violin solo in the introduction of the song "Mast Pawan Shaakhen Lahrayen" ("Haar Jeet", 1940) composed by R.C. Boral.[18]
  • Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishara Ho Gaya - This was the only song in the film whose lyrics were written by Jan Nisar Akhtar. However, the opening credits listed only Majrooh Sultanpuri who wrote the film's remaining songs.
  • Jaata Kahan Hai Diwane - This song was filmed on Waheeda Rehman but was removed in the final cut after the Censor Board objected. While some attribute the Censor Board's objection to the word "Fifi" in the song's lyrics, Waheeda Rehman clarified in an interview that their problem was with the entire first line.[19]
  • Jaata Kahan Hai Diwane - This song was recreated by Mikey McCleary for the film "Bombay Velvet" (2015). The recreated song was sung by Suman Sridhar. Mikey McCleary had used the same song earlier for Coke's Diwali TV commercial in 2010.[20]
  • Kahin Pe Nigahen Kahin Pe Nishana - Waheeda Rehman had an argument with director Raj Khosla over the costume she was asked to wear for this song. Khosla allowed her to wear a different dress after Guru Dutt intervened.[MR4]
  • Kahin Pe Nigahen Kahin Pe Nishana - Nadeem - Shravan may have adapted the tune of this song for the first lines of the Hindi film songs "Dhoom Dhoom Dhoom Dhoom Dholak Bajaana" ("Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri", 1990) and "Ram Narayan Baaja Bajaata" ("Saajan Chale Sasural", 1996).[21][22]
