Trivia

    Album

  • This was the first film produced under the banner of Cine Co-operative, a consortium formed by Balraj Sahni, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Geeta Bali and others. Writer Rajinder Singh Bedi was credited as the film's producer. The banner produced one more film after this, "Lal Batti" (1957), before closing down. Rajinder Singh Bedi focussed on screenwriting after that but did dabble with film production, including in the film "Rungoli" (1962), which he co-produced with Amar Kumar.[1][2]
  • Rajinder Singh Bedi adapted Nikolai Gogol's short story "The Overcoat" (1842) for this film. Bedi won the Filmfare Award for Best Story for the film.
  • This was the only Hindi film for which Hindustani vocalist Pandit Amarnath, disciple of Ustad Amir Khan, composed music. He was assisted in the film by another classical musician, sarangi player Pandit Ramnarayan.
  • Lata Mangeshkar refused to take a fee for this film since it was produced by a filmmaker co-operative. Except for one group song, the film's score comprised entirely of Lata Mangeshkar solos.[3]
  • A heavily edited version of this film was certified and released in 1956 with the title "The Clerk And The Coat".[MR1]
