Trivia

    Album

  • This film was said to be inspired by the real-life story of Santokben Jadeja, an alleged underworld don and politician from Porbandar, Gujarat. Santokben Jadeja had wanted the film to be banned for its prejudiced portrayal of the Mehar community. Writer, director Vinay Shukla had denied that the film had anything to do with Santokben.[1]
  • Writer Vinay Shukla returned to film-making with this film after a gap of 18 years. He had directed two films before this - "Wohi Baat" (1977) and "Sameera" (1981). Like this film, his first two films also had Shabana Azmi in the lead role.[2][3]
  • This was actress Raima Sen's debut Hindi film.
  • Writer Mahendra Desai had sued Vinay Shukla alleging that this film was plagiarised from his Gujarati novel "Valopat". Desai was backed by Santokben Jadeja, whose life this film was allegedly based on. Shukla was forced to acknowledge the similarities between the film and the book but insisted that they were coincidental.[4]
  • Vishal Bhardwaj won his first National Film Award for Best Music Direction for this film.
