Trivia

    Album

  • The film was inspired by the real-life stories of the rap artists Naezy and Divine. The film opened with a tribute to them - "This film is a shoutout to the original Gully Boys Naezy & Divine".
  • The film featured many rap artists and musicians playing themselves or in other cameo roles. These included, among others, Jasleen Royal, Dub Sharma, Emiway Bantai, SlowCheeta, Manj Musik, Raja Kumari, Bobby Friction, Kidshot, Malik Sahab, Shah Rule, and Divine.
  • Some critics pointed out that there were many similarities between this film and the Hollywood musical drama "8 Mile" (2002) starring the American rapper Eminem.[1][2]
  • The film won Filmfare Awards in thirteen categories - the most wins ever for any film. Filmfare received criticism from various quarters for handing out so many awards to one film. Many believed that the Awards ignored other deserving nominees including "Uri - The Surgical Strike" (2019) and "Article 15" (2019). Lyricist Manoj Muntashir was upset that he did not win the Best Lyricist award for "Teri Mitti Mein Mil Jaawan" ("Kesari", 2019) and announced that he would boycott Filmfare Awards going forward.[3][4][5][6][7]
  • The film's soundtrack was curated by musician Ankur Tewari, who was credited as Music Supervisor. Although the credits didn't highlight this, the soundtrack consisted of original songs as well as reproductions of songs recorded in the past. This was the first time in the history of Filmfare Awards that two films shared the Best Music Album award (previously named the Best Music Director award) - this film and "Kabir Singh" (2019). It was also the first time that the Best Music Album award was given to someone other than the music director. Producer, director Zoya Akhtar and music supervisor Ankur Tewari received the Filmfare Award for Best Music Album.[8]
  • This was actor Siddhant Chaturvedi's debut Hindi film.
  • This was the first time actress Amruta Subhash and her mother Jyoti Subhash appeared together in a film. Jyoti played Amruta's mother-in-law in it.
  • This was India's official nomination to the 2020 Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category. It did not make it to the top ten list of films considered for the award.[9]
  • A few weeks after the film's release, Ranveer Singh, who played a rapper in it and recorded eight songs for it, launched IncInk, a music label specialising in hip-hop and rap music. Singh had previously performed a few lines of rap in the Hindi film song "Aadat Se Majboor" ("Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl", 2011).[10][11]

    Song

  • Asli Hip Hop - This wasn't originally envisioned as a song. It was just supposed to be a few lines in a scene. However, it came out so well that Ankur Tewari, the music supervisor, decided to take the artists to the studio and record it as a song.[12]
  • Meri Gully Mein - This was a recreated version of the breakout song of rappers Naezy and Divine. The film's title was inspired by the song.[13]
  • Train Song - This was a reworked version of a song Raghu Dixit and Karsh Kale had originally created in 2013.[14]
  • Chaloon Main Wahan Jahan Tu Chala - Singer, composer Jasleen Royal made a cameo appearance in the film for this song. Only a short clip of the song was used in the film.
  • Bolo Azadi - This was a version of a song Dub Sharma had originally recorded in 2016. The original song was built around a sound sample of the sloganeering of Kanhaiya Kumar, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students' Union President, and his supporters. Kumar had raised these slogans at a meeting held at JNU a day following his release on bail after being arrested on charges of sedition. The charges were lodged against Kumar after seditious slogans were raised at an event held in JNU in support of the Kashmiri separatist Afzal Guru. The sloganeering samples were edited out and replaced with rap lyrics by Divine in the recreated version of the song.[15][16][17][18][19]
  • Har Gham Mein Khushi Hai - This was a reworked version of a song rapper Ace had recorded in 2015.[20]
  • Goriye - This was a recreated version of a song that appears to have been originally recorded in 2013 for a compilation album called "Diamond Cut". Kaka Bhaniawala, the singer of the Punjabi lyrics in it, died in 2009.
  • NY Se Mumbai - The song was used in the film's end credits but was not part of its music album. It was released separately as a single. The song saw the American rapper Nas (Nasir Jones) collaborating with Indian rappers for a Hindi film for the first time.[21]
