Trivia

    Album

  • This film was made and released simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil.
  • Kamal Haasan had initially engaged the renowned violinist L. Subramaniam to compose music for this film. He had even recorded a few songs and Kamal had also shot them. However, L. Subramaniam had backed out of the film since he did not want to be associated with a project that would likely offend the Hindu community. Kamal had then brought in Ilaiyaraaja on board. Since some of the songs had already been shot, Ilaiyaraaja watched those sequences and created his new compositions in such a way that the new songs would match the lip movements of the actors. Ilaiyaraaja thus saved Kamal the effort and money that would have been required to reshoot those songs.[1][2]
  • This was Shruti Haasan's Hindi film debut as child artist. She later debuted as a lead actress and singer in the film "Luck" (2009).[3]
  • This film was set against the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination and told the fictitious story of another attempt at killing him. The Tamil version of this film was initially titled "Satya Sodanai", inspired by the title of Gandhi's autobiography, "The Story of My Experiments with Truth".
  • Actor Shah Rukh Khan, who played a key role in this film without any remuneration, acquired its remake rights in 2018.[4]
  • Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, Tushar Gandhi, made a cameo appearance as himself in this film.
  • The role that was played by Atul Kulkarni in this film was originally meant for Mohan Gokhale, who had shot most of his scenes when he passed away. Kulkarni was then brought in and all scenes done by Gokhale were reshot.
  • The screening of this film was disrupted in several theatres across the country by protesting Congress party workers. The Congress workers were objecting to what they saw as a disrespectful portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in the film.[5]
  • The Tamil version of this film was Kamal Haasan's first Tamil film as a director. His directorial debut in Hindi was "Chachi 420" (1997).[6]

    Song

  • Vaishnav Jana To - The song's opening lines were taken from a poem written by the 15th-century Gujarati poet Narsinh Mehta.
  • Har Koi Samjhe - This was the first Hindi film song of the Hindustani classical vocalist Ajoy Chakrabarty.
