Trivia

    Album

  • This was the last Hindi film directed by Gulzar. It was speculated that the failure of this film made him quit direction. However, according to Vishal Bhardwaj, who tried to convince him to return to film-making after this film, this was because Gulzar wanted to focus on his literary work.[1]
  • This film was based on a short story director Gulzar himself had written. It was his daughter Meghna who picked this story. She was also an associate scriptwriter for the film.[2]
  • It was actor Sunil Shetty, who also featured in this film, who introduced Gulzar to producer Dhirajlal Shah and was instrumental in making this film happen.
  • This was actress Suhasini Mulay's breakthrough film. She had acted in only a handful of Hindi films after debuting in Mrinal Sen's "Bhuvan Shome" (1969) at the age of 19. She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for this film and bagged big films like "Dil Chahta Hai" (2001) and "Lagaan" (2001) after it. Her acting career was considerably more prolific after the recognition she gained for her work in this film.[3]
  • According to Vishal Bhardwaj, Gulzar was very angry with the film's producer because of the cuts introduced in the version of the film that was released in theatres. It was Gulzar's experience in this film that made Vishal Bhardwaj ensure that he didn't lose control of his films.[4]
