Trivia

    Album

  • The film was said to be an adaptation of the Bengali film "Uttarayan" (1960) based on Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay's novel of the same title. There were also allegations that the film was inspired by the British film "Libel" (1959). According to Dev Anand, however, the film was based on a real-life incident that occurred during World War II. It was remade in Telugu as "Ramuni Minchina Ramudu" (1975) starring N.T. Rama Rao.[MR52]
  • This was the only Navketan movie for which Jaidev composed music. Navketan signed him up for the film as a reward for his loyalty to the studio. Jaidev got this opportunity to compose music independently for the banner after assisting S.D. Burman in several Navketan films.[MR3]
  • This was the directorial debut of Navketan's publicist Amarjeet. According to various accounts, including one by Vijay Anand's wife Sushma, Amarjeet had nursed Anand back to health after he had fallen sick. To show his gratitude, Anand had promised Amarjeet that he would give him an opportunity to direct a film. Anand fulfilled his promise by writing a detailed script for this film and handing it over to Amarjeet to direct. However, Amarjeet had trouble discharging his duties and Anand ended up directing the film himself.[1]
  • Vijay Anand worked in the film as Dev Anand's body double in the scenes in which the two characters played by Dev appeared on the screen together.[MR52]
  • A digitally restored and colourised version of this film was released in 2011, its 50th anniversary year.[2]

    Song

  • Allah Tero Naam Ishwar Tero Naam - Jaidev had initially planned to use M.S. Subbulakshmi's voice for this song. He ended up giving it to Lata Mangeshkar after she asked him for the opportunity to sing it.[MR4]
  • Allah Tero Naam Ishwar Tero Naam - The original 78 rpm recording of this song had Sahir Ludhianvi's original lyrics for the song in which the first antara started with "Is dharti ka roop na ujde". Sahir later changed these lyrics to "Maangon ka sindoor na chhoote" to fit the film's context. It was this altered version that was used in the film.[MR10]
  • Abhi Naa Jao Chhod Kar - Lata Mangeshkar passed on this song to Asha Bhosle because of its suggestive title.[MR4]
  • Jahan Mein Aisa Kaun Hai (Dukh Aur Sukh Ke Raaste) - Pandit Shivkumar Sharma played the santoor in this song. This was among his earliest work in Hindi films.[3]
  • Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya - The glockenspiel in this song was played by Kersi Lord. Dev Anand's musical cigarette lighter in the film also played the same tune.[MR10]
