Trivia

    Album

  • Yash Chopra conceived the idea for this film when another film he was directing, "Aadmi Aur Insaan" (1969), was delayed. Its final shooting schedule had to be postponed since Saira Banu was recovering from a leg injury in London and was unavailable. The Chopra brothers decided to make a low-budget film in the few weeks that were available till the shooting for "Aadmi Aur Insaan" (1969) resumed. As a result, this film was completed in just 40 days on a single set. Rajesh Khanna was chosen for the film's lead role in order to fulfill B.R. Films' contractual obligation of doing a film with the winner of the All India Talent Contest organized by United Producers and the Filmfare magazine in 1965. Raakhee was initially offered the female lead role but couldn't accept it since she was under contract with Rajshri Films for "Jeevan Mrityu" (1970). The role then went to Nanda.[1][2][MR37]
  • The film was adapted from the Gujarati play "Dhoomas" which in turn was inspired by Monte Doyle's play "Signpost to Murder" or by the 1965 Hollywood crime thriller based on it.[MR37]
  • Rajesh Khanna was forced to shoot some scenes of "Do Raaste" (1969) unshaven since his character in this film had to sport a beard and both films were being shot at around the same time.[3]
  • This was the last film Yash Chopra directed for his brother B.R. Chopra. All his previous films were for the B.R. Films banner.
  • This was producer B.R. Chopra and composer Salil Chowdhury's second film together with no songs. Their first songless film was "Kanoon" (1960).[4]
  • The film inspired a 2017 film of the same title. While this film was produced by B.R. Chopra and directed by Yash Chopra, the adaptation was directed by Abhay Chopra - B.R. Chopra's grandson, Yash Chopra's grandnephew and Ravi Chopra's son. Ravi Chopra was an Assistant Director in this film.[5][6]
  • Iftekhar received a lot of appreciation for his performance as a police inspector in this film. The film revived the actor's flailing career but also, in the long run, typecast him as a police officer. Following this, Iftekhar became a steady member of B.R. Chopra's team and appeared in many other films produced by him.
