Trivia

    Album

  • Differences developed between Yash Chopra and music director Rajesh Roshan during the making of this film. After two songs had been recorded for the film, Yash Chopra asked Shiv - Hari (Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia) to come on board. Since Rajesh Roshan was the son of their friend Roshan, Shiv - Hari declined Yash Chopra's offer. Chopra had the rest of the film's songs recorded by Rajesh Roshan but engaged Salil Chowdhury for the film's background score. Shiv - Hari did take up Yash Chopra's offer two years later and signed up their first Hindi film as music director - "Silsila" (1981). They composed music for many other Yash Chopra films after that.[1][MR10]
  • This film was inspired by the real-life Chasnala mining disaster of 1975. Hundreds of miners were killed in the Chasnala coal mines near Dhanbad, Jharkhand, when an explosion resulted in the mine getting flooded. Additionally, Amitabh Bachchan's character in this film was based on the titular character of Joseph Conrad's novel "Lord Jim" (1900).
  • The relationship between Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha became strained during the making of this film. Sinha felt that Bachchan was keeping a distance from him and was getting preferential treatment. He was particularly unhappy that what was an equal fight sequence in the script involving his and Amitabh's characters became a sequence of "Amitabh beating the hell out of" Sinha.[MR35]
  • This was Yash Chopra's last film with his friend, lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi. Chopra collaborated with Sahir in every film he made during the lyricist's lifetime, starting with his directorial debut "Dhool Ka Phool" (1959).[2]

    Song

  • Ik Raasta Hai Zindagi - The chorus in the prelude of this song was sampled from the song "Jolene" (1973) by the American artist Dolly Parton.[3]
  • Meri Dooron Se Aayi Baraat - Poonam Dhillon appeared in the film in a cameo role of a bride in this song. She did not have any spoken lines in the film.
  • Dhoom Mache Dhoom - Aditya Chopra was said to be inspired by this film to make "Dhoom" (2004). The title of the 2004 film was inspired by this song.[4]
  • Mujhe Pyar Ka Tohfa De Ke - This song was part of the audio release but did not appear in the film.
