This was the spiritual sequel to the film "Kahaani" (2012). The project went through several changes before it was finalised. Sujoy Ghosh had pitched an idea for a sequel to Vidya Balan after "Kahaani" (2012). The actress had rejected it stating that it belonged to a different genre and would not work as a sequel. Ghosh had been taken aback by the rejection and had put the sequel on hold in 2014. It was reported that Ghosh and Balan had a fallout as a result of this and were not on speaking terms. Ghosh moved on to other projects, one of which was a film titled "Durga Rani Singh". This was another film with a strong female lead. However, Ghosh had trouble getting the right actress to play the central role. There were reports of Kangana Ranaut, and later Aishwarya Rai, signing the film but the film didn't proceed with them. Ghosh and Balan had patched up by this time. When the director pitched her the script for "Durga Rani Singh", the actress not only agreed to come on board but said that it could be the sequel to "Kahaani" (2012). Ghosh then made changes to the script to turn "Durga Rani Singh" into the sequel.[1][2][3][4][5]
This was the first film in which director Sujoy Ghosh used a music director other than Vishal - Shekhar.
As in many of his films, Sujoy Ghosh paid tribute to R.D. Burman by including many of his songs in the film's background score.
