Trivia

    Album

  • After working in films as an actor for more than a decade, Subhash Ghai turned a director with this film. It was also Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy's breakthrough film. Their films prior to this had met with limited success.
  • Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy had worked together in the film "Milap" (1972) before this film. The two actors had quarrelled on the sets of "Milap" (1972), and when Reena Roy's name came up for the female lead in this film, Sinha was not happy. He finally accepted Roy as his leading lady after N.N. Sippy, Subhash Ghai, Reena Roy, her mother, and her sister Barkha visited him at his home and convinced him. Interestingly, in his own words, Sinha became "far too fond of" Roy during the making of this film. The leading pair were rumoured to be involved in an affair when this film was being made. Even their on-screen partnership took off after this film became a big hit.[1][MR35]
  • This was the film in which Ajit spoke what went on to become a cult-classic line - "Saara shahar mujhe lion ke naam se jaanta hai".
  • This film was remade in Telugu as "Khaidi Kalidasu" (1977), in Kannada as "Kaalinga" (1980), in Tamil as "Sangili" (1982) and in Malayalam as "Pathamudayam" (1985).
  • Subhash Ghai said in many interviews that Shatrughan Sinha had slept off mid-way through the narration of this film's script. In his biography, Sinha countered that this was true but only because Ghai had started the narration at 3:30 am. He also said that he had agreed to work with Ghai, who he had studied with at FTII, after many actors, including Sunil Dutt and Feroz Khan, had rejected the film. Also, despite his less than enthusiastic response to the script, it was Sinha who had sold it to producer N.N. Sippy and gotten his agreement to let Subhash Ghai direct the film.[MR35]
  • This film marked the beginning of a rocky relationship between Subhash Ghai and Shatrughan Sinha. Following the success of this film, they worked in two more films - "Vishwanath" (1977) and "Gautam Govinda" (1979). However, their egos and their competing affection for Reena Roy drove a wedge between them, and they stopped working together eventually. Over the years, their relationship continued to be a stormy one even though Ghai always considered Shatrughan Sinha's wife Poonam as his "raakhi" sister.[2][3][MR35]
  • This was one of the three films in which Subhash Ghai and Bharat B. Bhalla collaborated as story writers. The other two films were "Khaan Dost" (1976) and "Aakhri Daku" (1978). They also wrote the script for the film "Bagula Bhagat" (1978).[4][5][6]
