Trivia

    Album

  • The film was based on a Hindi novel of the same title written by Gulshan Nanda in 1970. Nanda's novel itself was inspired either by the novel "I Married a Dead Man" (1948) by the American author Cornell Woolrich or by the film based on it, "No Man of Her Own" (1950). The Hindi film was remade in Tamil as "Nenjil Oru Mull" (1981) and in Telugu as "Punnami Chandrudu" (1987). Woolrich's novel was also the basis of the Hollywood film "Mrs. Winterbourne" (1996).
  • The film's audio records were issued in 1970 and it was certified in December 1970. It was released in theatres in January 1971.
  • After "Aradhana" (1969), Shakti Samanta wanted to repeat the successful pair of Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in this film. However, Tagore turned it down since she was pregnant at the time. Asha Parekh was Samanta's second choice for the role.[1][2]
  • The baaraat in the film's opening scene played the tune of a song from Shakti Samanta and Rajesh Khanna's previous film together, "Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu" ("Aradhana", 1969).[3]
  • This film was conceived in a chance meeting between filmmaker Shakti Samanta and writer Gulshan Nanda. Samanta had just watched the film "Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati" (1969) and found out that its climax was the same as that of his film "Aradhana" (1969). The filmmaker was dejected and was thinking of shelving the film. In a bid to cheer him up, Nanda narrated the story of his novel which became the basis of this film. He also gave Samanta an idea that helped revive "Aradhana" (1969). According to Shakti Samanta's son Ashim, "Two of his finest films were created in that evening, within a gap of few hours".[4][5][6]

    Song

  • Pyar Deewana Hota Hai - R.D. Burman had used the tune of this song previously in the Bengali film song "Gun Gun Gun Gunje Amar" ("Rajkumari", 1970) sung by Asha Bhosle.[7]
  • Mera Naam Hai Shabnam - The song contained mostly spoken words by Asha Bhosle. It featured vocalisations by R.D. Burman but he was not credited as a singer in the film's audio records. However, music label Saregama's digital releases credited him as a singer.
  • Yeh Sham Mastani Madhosh Kiye Jaye - R.D. Burman had used the tune of this song previously in the Bengali non-film song "Akash Keno Daake" sung by Kishore Kumar. The tune may have been inspired by the song "The Green Leaves of Summer" performed by The Brothers Four for the Hollywood film "The Alamo" (1960).[8][9]
  • Yeh Sham Mastani Madhosh Kiye Jaye - The whistling in this popular song was rendered by Manohari Singh.[10]
  • Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai - This song inspired the title of a Hindi film released in 2012. The 2012 film was produced by Ashim Samanta, the son of producer, director Shakti Samanta. Ashim Samanta launched his son Aditya Samanta as an actor in it.[11]
