This film was originally made in 1975 by the Janata Party MP Amrit Nahata. The political spoof targeted Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's son Sanjay Gandhi by using "People's car" as the election symbol of a political party - a dig at Sanjay Gandhi's pet project - Maruti. The film angered Sanjay Gandhi so much that his supporters confiscated all prints of the film and burnt them at the Maruti factory in Delhi. The film became a key element in the Janata Party's Lok Sabha election campaign in 1977. When the Janata Party defeated the Congress and came to power, the film was remade with a modified cast. Legal proceedings were initiated against Sanjay Gandhi and V.C. Shukla, the Information & Broadcasting Minister during the Emergency. After a protracted legal battle, the Delhi High Court convicted them and sentenced them to two years of rigorous imprisonment. The verdict was later overturned.[1][2]
