When Shabana Azmi's work in the film "Kanneshwara Rama" (1977) came under heavy criticism, she defended herself by saying that she was not even supposed to do the film. She claimed that she had signed up for it to bail out director M.S. Sathyu when Smita Patil had walked out of the film. According to Shabana, Patil had reneged on her commitment to Sathyu, citing a conflict with her exams. Patil had later signed up for this film, which Shabana Azmi was supposed to do. Smita Patil had refuted Azmi's version of events. "Exams had nothing to do with it. The roles were switched quite amicably. Anyway, I don't even remember the details, and I don't want to enter into a controversy with Shabana. As it is, we are not great pals.", she was quoted as saying in India Today.
