Trivia

    Album

  • This was a biopic based on the celebrated Indian boxer who gave the film its title.
  • This was the debut film of director Omung Kumar and writer Saiwyn Quadras. They started work on the film's script in 2011 and it took them two years to finish it. Kumar met Mary Kom in 2011 to seek her permission for the biopic. The contract they signed allowed the filmmakers to tell the story of Mary Kom's life up to 2008. Therefore, even though the film was released in 2014, it didn't show her gold medal win at the 2010 World Boxing Championship and her famous 2012 Olympic bronze medal.[1]
  • Priyanka Chopra's casting in the role of a woman from the North-East was met with criticism from many quarters. However, Mary Kom herself defended the casting. According to Chopra, the boxer made the following argument in favour of the casting - "As long as I was from Manipur, nobody thought I was an Indian. As soon as Priyanka Chopra played me, suddenly everybody is convinced that Manipur is a part of India.".[2][3][4]
  • Actor Darshan Kumaar debuted in "Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai" (2001) and was credited as Darshan Gandas. After another acting role in "Tere Naam" (2003), he did not feature in any Hindi film for more than a decade. He made a comeback in this film as the lead opposite Priyanka Chopra.[5][6]
  • The film was not released in Mary Kom's home state Manipur. This was because Hindi films had been banned in the state since 2000 due to a call made by the militant group Revolutionary Peoples Front.[7]

    Song

  • Salaam India - This song was selected as an anthem for the 2014 Asian Games held in South Korea.[8]
  • Chaoro - Lori - This was Priyanka Chopra's playback singing debut in Hindi films.
  • Sukoon Mila (Remix) - This remixed track was released separately and was not part of the film's album.
