Trivia

    Album

  • The film was loosely based on a play titled "Modern Marriage" written by Abrar Alvi when he was still in college. It credited Alvi for dialogues but did not carry any credits for story and screenplay. The film was set against the backdrop of the efforts to pass the Hindu Marriage Act which codified the laws related to marriage, separation and divorce in the Hindu community. Divorce was a central theme in the film's plot. The Act was passed in 1955, the year the film was released.[1]
  • Guru Dutt played a cartoonist in this film. The cartoons featured in this film were drawn by renowned cartoonist R.K. Laxman.
  • Shyama was Guru Dutt's first choice for the lead role in this film. She had worked with him in "Aar Paar" (1954), which was a big hit. However, Dutt decided to not cast her when she demanded double her fee in "Aar Paar" (1954). It was only then that the role went to Madhubala.[2][3]

    Song

  • Preetam Aan Milo - O.P. Nayyar had composed this song at the beginning of his career for a non-film record. The original version of the song was sung by C.H. Atma and its lyrics by written by O.P. Nayyar's wife Saroj Mohini Nayyar. The film credited only Majrooh Sultanpuri who wrote the remaining songs in the film. It appears that the song was added to the film since it featured the name of the film's hero, Preetam. R.D. Burman recorded a parody of this song decades later for the film "Angoor" (1982).[4][5][MR4]
