Trivia

    Album

  • This film was based on the Bengali short story "Akal Basant" by Samaresh Basu.
  • Rekha was originally cast in this film and even shot for it before she was replaced by Sharmila Tagore. Apparently, a reclusive Rekha had refused to meet some journalists on the sets of the film. Peeved by what he considered to be unprofessionalism on her part, Gulzar had replaced her with Sharmila. Actress Shabana Azmi has contested this story and stated that Rekha's exit had to do with a disagreement she had with Gulzar over wearing an anklet.[1]
  • This film had a limited theatrical release since it couldn't find enough distributors. Its viewership and the audience's appreciation for the film increased only after Doordarshan aired the film. A DVD release of this film edited out the film's climax and ended with the song "Raah Pe Rahte Hain" when Sanjeev Kumar's character left the village where the film was based.

    Song

  • Raah Pe Rahte Hain - R.D. Burman adapted the tune of the last line of the antaras of the song "Hum Dono Do Premi" ("Ajnabee", 1974) for the flute interlude in this song. He had used a similar tune earlier in the prelude of the song "Chalte Chalte Peechhe Mud Ke Dekh Zara" ("Jaise Ko Taisa", 1973).[2][3]
  • Raah Pe Rahte Hain - The second line of this song's mukhda was the second line a couplet by Wajid Ali Shah, the nawab of Awadh from 1847 to 1856. The couplet went "Dar-o-deewaar pe hasrat se nazar karte hain / Khush raho ahl-e-vatan hum to safar karte hain".
  • Phir Se Aaiyo Badra Bidesi - This song was shot on Shabana Azmi at Rohtang Pass. She had to shoot this song in extremely cold weather wearing just a shawl due to considerations of continuity.[4]
  • Aanki Chali Baanki Chali - The Bengali lyrics in this song, "Panta bhaate tatka begun pora", were perhaps a nod to the Bengali story on which this film was based.
