Trivia

    Album

  • The film's success spawned remakes in various languages. It was remade in Telugu as "Nindu Manasulu" (1967) starring N.T. Rama Rao, in Tamil as "Oli Vilakku" (1968) starring M.G. Ramachandran, and in Malayalam as "Puthiya Velicham" (1979) starring Jayan.
  • This film was a milestone in Dharmendra's career. It established him as a star and created a macho image for him that no Hindi film star before him had enjoyed. An iconic scene in the film played a big part in shaping this image. In this scene, Dharmendra's character Shaka is shown to be drunk on his way home, when he finds a blind beggar, played by Leela Chitnis, shivering in the cold. The kind Shaka takes off his shirt and covers her up with it. He then enters his home to find Shanti Devi, played by Meena Kumari, lying on the bed, pretending to be asleep. Shaka approaches her and, just when the audience is expecting the worst, pulls up her blanket to cover her up. It was reported that people went back to the theatres several times to watch the bare-chested Dharmendra in this scene. Ironically, Dharmendra was not filmmaker O.P. Ralhan's first choice for the film. Ralhan had initially approached Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar but they had turned it down considering the film - although inspired by a real-life story - to be too bold. In fact, it was said that halfway through its making, even Dharmendra had thought of quitting over differences with Ralhan.[1][MR53]

    Song

  • Zindagi Mein Pyar Karna Seekh Le - This song was based on Nat King Cole's "Brazilian Love Song (Andorinha Preta)", first recorded in 1959. The original "Andorinha Preta" was a Portuguese song written by the Brazilian artist Breno Ferreira in 1932. Nat King Cole's version was an adaptation of this Portuguese song. The same tune was later used in the Hindi film song "Main Tere Dil Ki Malika" ("Mast", 1999). Asha Bhosle lent her voice to both these Hindi film songs, released more than thirty years apart.[2][3]
