Trivia

    Album

  • This was Bengali filmmaker Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's first Hindi film as a director. Shoojit Sircar was credited as the film's story writer and creative producer. However, there were speculations that Sircar had ghost-directed the film. When asked about it, the filmmaker said that he had been actively involved in the film's making since Amitabh Bachchan had signed the film at his behest and he felt accountable to the veteran actor.[1]
  • The film was a critical as well as commercial success and won many awards. Its success spawned remakes - in Tamil as "Nerkonda Paarvai" (2019) and in Telugu as "Vakeel Saab" (2020).
  • The mask worn by Amitabh Bachchan's character in the film was Shoojit Sircar's idea. The idea came to him when he spotted a high-altitude mask in Bachchan's house. Sircar said that the mask highlighted the character's eccentricity and also made it easier to shoot Bachchan outdoors without people recognising him.[2]
  • Writer Gautam Chintamani wrote a book titled "Pink: The Inside Story" documenting the making of the film. It was published on the first anniversary of the film's release.[3][MR49]
  • The film's powerful climax underwent changes at the last minute. Amitabh Bachchan's monologue in the scene in which his character delivered the closing argument was not part of the initial draft. Bachchan himself felt that a short closing argument would suffice. However, writer Ritesh Shah came up with a monologue inspired by a Facebook post of a photo of a coffee mug with the line - "No is a complete sentence". Everyone involved appreciated what came to be known as the "No means no" monologue and decided to include it in the script. Even the lawyers who were consulted for the film encouraged the inclusion of these lines, including Shah's Hindi adaptation of the coffee mug line - "Na sirf ek shabd nahin, apne aap mein ek poora vakya hai". Another significant change in the climax was with regards to the court's ruling on the case. In the original script, the ruling was kept realistic - it went in favour of the accused. Shah's wife Saba, however, was against it. Shah passed on her feedback to Shoojit Sircar and Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury but it was only on the day of the scene's shoot that Sircar decided to change the ruling in favour of the female protagonists.[MR49]
  • Two Pakistani artists made their Hindi film debut in the film's music album - Faiza Mujahid and Qurat Ul Ain Balouch.
  • Despite his seniority, Amitabh Bachchan was listed in the film's credits after the three leading actresses - Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, and Andrea Tariang. This was done in accordance with the film's feminist theme.
