Trivia

    Album

  • The story of this film was based on the Hollywood film "Charley's Aunt" (1941) which in turn was based on a very successful play of the same title written by Brandon Thomas. Its premise was used in many other films - the Telugu films "Bhale Mastaru" (1969) and "Peddintalludu" (1991), the Tamil film "Nadigan" (1990), the Kannada film "Gopi Krishna" (1992), and the Hindi films "Ladies Tailor" (1981) and "Dil Tera Aashiq" (1993).[1][2][MR15]
  • The film had a convoluted genesis. Its writer Shashi Bhushan had first offered his script to Guru Dutt in the late 1950s. Dutt had liked the script and had started shooting the film with Kishore Kumar and Waheeda Rehman in the lead roles. As was common practice in those days, Guru Dutt had submitted one completed reel to the Censor Board for review. When the censor board rejected the film, Guru Dutt canned it and returned the script to Shashi Bhushan. The writer then bumped into Lekh Tandon, a struggling filmmaker at the time who was on the verge of quitting Bollywood. Lekh Tandon liked the script so much that he bought it right away. He then reworked the script with his friend Abrar Alvi and approached Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor for the film's lead role. When they declined the offer, Tandon turned to Shammi Kapoor. Tentative about working with a newcomer, Shammi Kapoor demanded that he get the opportunity to see the first three reels of the film and then decide if he wanted to continue. The debutant director's tenacity paid off when Kapoor gave him the thumbs up after watching the first three reels. The film went on to become a big commercial success.[MR15]

    Song

  • Main Chali Main Chali - This song may have inspired the Pakistani film song "Bas Ek Tere Siva" ("Doorian", 1984) which in turn was plagiarised for the Hindi film songs "Duniya Mein Tere Siva" ("Aandhiyan", 1990) and "Jaan-E-Jigar Jaaneman" ("Aashiqui", 1990).[3][4][5]
  • Awaz De Ke Humen Tum Bulao - Manohari Singh played the saxophone in this song.[6]
