• The film was inspired by the real-life serial killer Raman Raghav who was active in Bombay in the 1960s. Director Anurag Kashyap first heard about the serial killer in the early 1990s when he joined a film production company called Media Classics. Sriram Raghavan had made a docu-drama on Raman Raghav for Media Classics around then with Raghubir Yadav playing the titular character. A fascinated Kashyap researched the character after watching Raghavan's film and decided that he would make a film on him someday. He finally decided to make the film after "Bombay Velvet" (2015). Kashyap knew that he wouldn't be able to find anyone to fund another period film after the failure of "Bombay Velvet" (2015). He, therefore, decided to make a contemporary film inspired by Raman Raghav's story. The Tamil film "Sigappu Rojakkal" (1978) and its Hindi remake "Red Rose" (1980) were also inspired by the same serial killer.[1][2][3][4]
• This was the debut film of actress Sobhita Dhulipala, Miss Earth India 2013.
