• Jaidev won the first of his three National Film Awards for Best Music Direction (Songs) for this film. The other films he won this award for were "Gaman" (1978) and "Ankahee" (1984). Jaidev and Vishal Bhardwaj have won the most number of National Film Awards in this category for Hindi films.[1][2]
• Amitabh Bachchan got a role in this film on the recommendation of director Sunil Dutt's wife, Nargis. Nargis herself had been asked by Indira Gandhi - a close friend of Amitabh's mother Teji Bachchan - to help out the struggling actor. Ironically, the actor who came to be known for his impressive dialogue delivery was cast as a mute in this film. Sunil Dutt once revealed that at the film's premiere, actress Meena Kumari chided him for his decision to cast an actor with such a magnificent voice as a mute.[3]
• This film was launched with director Sukhdev at the helm. Producer Sunil Dutt decided to direct the film after creative differences arose between them early on in the film's shooting.
• While this film was critically acclaimed, it was a commercial failure and resulted in serious financial issues for Sunil Dutt. Dutt's family sustained over the next few years with the proceeds from a preview theatre Nargis had built in the compound of their mansion. A few hit films he acted in during the mid-1970s eventually helped Dutt recover financially.[MR27]

• Zalim Meri Sharaab Mein Yeh Kya Mila Diya - One of the children flanking the lead qawwal in this song played by Sudhir was Sanjay Dutt in a cameo role. Sunil Dutt apparently decided to include his son in the song on an impulse when he visited the film's sets during his school break. This was Sanjay Dutt's first film appearance. He debuted as an adult in "Rocky" (1981).[4][MR27]
