Sushant Singh Rajput had originally been signed to play the film's lead role which was eventually played by John Abraham. Sushant opted out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.[1]
The film was said to be inspired by the real-life story of the Indian spy Ravindra Kaushik who went undercover in Pakistan and rose through the ranks to become a major in the Pakistani army. He was eventually caught, tortured, and sentenced to life. He died in 2001 in a jail in Pakistan.[2][3]
Lyricist Shabbir Ahmed made his debut as a music director in this film.
