- This film was inspired by the real-life events surrounding what was commonly known as the Nanavati case. This was a 1959 court case in which Naval Commander K.M. Nanavati was tried for the murder of his wife's lover, Prem Ahuja. The Hindi films "Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar Ke" (1963) and "Achanak" (1973) were also inspired by the same case.[1][2]
- The film was criticised for its historical inaccuracies with respect to the Indian Navy. Among the most discussed bloopers in the film were those in the naval uniform worn by Akshay Kumar's character. When asked about these issues in the film, producer Neeraj Pandey said that he was "disgusted" by them, especially since they had a naval officer on board as a writer. Another controversy related to the naval uniform costume broke out two years after the film's release when Akshay Kumar put it up on auction. The proceeds from the auction were supposed to go to an animal rescue and welfare NGO. However, a number of serving and former naval officers, as well as other individuals, objected to the auction. They sent a legal notice to Kumar and his wife Twinkle Khanna asking them to withdraw the auction. The notice charged the couple with "playing with the sentiments” of the armed forces. It further added that the costume could find its way "to anti-national elements who can use it to foment trouble".[3][4][5]
- Akshay Kumar won the National Film Award for Best Actor for this film. The award was met with criticism from various quarters. Many opined that there were other actors more deserving of the award. Filmmaker Priyadarshan, who was the Chairperson of the jury deciding the 64th National Awards, defended the decision stating that Kumar was given the award considering his performances in this film as well as "Airlift" (2015). However, since the rules allowed the award for only one film, this film was chosen. Apurva Asrani, the writer of the critically acclaimed "Aligarh" (2016), took to Twitter to ask if Kumar was even eligible for the award given his Canadian citizenship. He also expressed disappointment at Manoj Bajpayee not winning the Best Actor award for "Aligarh" (2016). It was clarified that foreign nationals were also eligible for the National Film Awards.[6][7][8][9][10]
