Trivia

    Album

  • This film was the Hindi remake of the hit Tamil film "Alaipayuthey" (2000), directed by Mani Ratnam. All A.R. Rahman compositions from the original film were reused in this film, except for "Naina Milaay Ke" and "Mainda Yaar Mila De Saaiyan", which were new compositions.
  • This was the directorial debut of Shaad Ali. 15 years after this film was released, he remade another Mani Ratnam film, "OK Kanmani" (2015), in Hindi - "OK Jaanu" (2016). In this film as well, A.R. Rahman was the music director, and Gulzar wrote the film's lyrics and dialogues.[1]
  • Mani Ratnam had originally envisaged "Alaipayuthey" (2000) as a Hindi film and had even registered the title "Mast" for it. He had gotten Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol on board for it but had abandoned it later because he wasn't satisfied with the film's structure. He then proceeded to make "Dil Se" (1998) with Shah Rukh. It was only later that the non-linear structure of the "Mast" script fell into place. However, Mani Ratnam decided to make it in Tamil as "Alaipayuthey" (2000) instead. Shah Rukh ended up doing a cameo in its Hindi remake.[2][MR17]

    Song

  • Saathiya - The team of Mani Ratnam, A.R. Rahman and Gulzar had first explored the concept of different shades of love in "Satrangi Re" ("Dil Se", 1998). Mani Ratnam wanted to further explore this concept, and this resulted in the song "Pachchai Nirame" ("Alaiypayuthe", 2000), the original Tamil version of this song.[3][4][MR17]
