Trivia

    Album

  • This was the first of the two Hindi films directed by the celebrated filmmaker Satyajit Ray. The other film was "Sadgati" (1981). Both films were adaptations of Munshi Premchand's works with the same titles.[1]
  • The prominent British actor and filmmaker Richard Attenborough had an acting role in this film. It was his only Hindi film.
  • Amitabh Bachchan lent his voice as a narrator in this film.
  • Producer Suresh Jindal had approached Satyajit Ray through his friend Tinnu Anand, who had worked as Ray's assistant for five years, to make a film in Hindi. Jindal was quite nervous when they met Ray since the legendary filmmaker had, in the past, refused to make films in languages other than Bengali. However, Ray was receptive of the idea. It was Ray who suggested making this film based on Munshi Premchand's story. However, he warned Jindal that this would be an expensive film.[MR44]
  • The distributors of this film had asked for a refund after they were shown a preview before its release. This experience disturbed Satyajit Ray so much that he was reluctant to work in non-Bengali films again. He did eventually direct the Hindi film "Sadgati" (1981) for Doordarshan. He also worked again with the producer of this film, Suresh Jindal. However, Ray's second film with Jindal had to be shelved when a heart-attack rendered him in poor health and prevented him from travelling outside Calcutta.[MR44]
  • Shabana Azmi agreed to work in this film despite her small role in it. She jokingly told producer Suresh Jindal that she would be willing to sweep the floor for Satyajit Ray.[MR44]
  • Work on this film was delayed as Sanjeev Kumar suffered a heart attack and Amjad Khan met with a road accident during its making.[MR44]
  • This was actor Saeed Jaffrey's first Hindi film.

    Song
