Trivia

    Album

  • Salil Chowdhury passed away during the making of this film. Perhaps due to this, this was the only Hindi film in which he composed the songs but not the background score.[1]
  • Director G.V. Iyer had initially picked Naseeruddin Shah to play the role of Ramakrishna Paramahansa. However, succumbing to threats by some Hindu groups, he later decided to get Mithun Chakraborty to play this role instead.[2]
  • G.V. Iyer had started work on researching and writing the script for this film in 1986. Its music was released in 1994 but the film itself was released in 1998. It appears that even though the film was not complete in 1995, it was considered for the National Film Awards that year. Mithun Chakraborty won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film.[3]
  • The Ramakrishna Mission had objected to this film and listed several objectionable scenes in it. Taking cognisance of these objections, director G.V. Iyer made these changes so that the film could be screened on Doordarshan as planned on August 15, 1998.[4]

    Song

  • Sanyasi Talashi Jiski Hai - Salil Chowdhury had used the tune of this song earlier for the Bengali non-film song "Guru Guru Megher Mondra Bahare" (1973) sung by Sabita Chowdhury.[5]
  • Naahi Surjo Naahi Jyoti - The lyrics of this song were from a Bengali poem written by Swami Vivekananda describing Nirvikalpa Samadhi.
