Trivia

    Album

  • The film was based on what was commonly known as the Aarushi Talwar murder case. The case involved the murder of Aarushi Talwar, a 13-year-old girl, and Hemraj Banjade, a live-in domestic help employed by her parents. The case gained a lot of media attention as it went through many twists and turns. At the time of the film's release, Ramesh and Nupur Talwar, the parents of Aarushi, were lodged in jail, having been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2013. While the film did not use the real names of the characters involved, its title was a clear reference to this case. It was sympathetic to the parents' claims of innocence and reopened a public debate on their conviction. The Talwars had filed an appeal in 2014 and were acquitted and released from jail in 2017, two years after the release of this film. "Rahasya" (2015), another Hindi film released earlier that year, was said to be inspired by the same case. "Rahasya" (2015) had been certified in January 2014 but could not be released due to the Talwars' legal action against it. Unlike "Rahasya" (2015), this film did not face any legal challenges despite its makers claiming that they had not taken permission from the Talwars.[1][2][3]
  • Vishal Bhardwaj acknowledged that his script's examination of the same event from various perspectives was inspired by Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon" (1950).[4]
  • The film's working title was "Nyodda". Its eventual title was owned by Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC), who were the co-producers initially but had to bow out later. PNC "continued to support" the film and gave up their rights to the title.[5]
  • Tabu made a cameo appearance in the film as the estranged wife of Irrfan Khan's character. The minor subplot of their failing marriage was evocative of Gulzar's "Ijaazat" (1986). Director Meghna Gulzar paid tribute to her father's film with a few references to it and the song "Mera Kuchh Saamaan Tumhare Paas Pada Hai".[6]
