Amol Palekar's wife Chitra Palekar wrote the screenplay and co-wrote the dialogues of this film. This was her first Hindi film.
A unique feature of this musical film was the use of verse. Characters of the film spoke in verse transitioning into and out of songs and even in the middle of songs. Writer Kamlesh Pandey debuted as a lyricist in this film.
This film was an adaptation of the play "The Rainmaker", written by the American writer N. Richard Nash in the early 1950s. The play was the basis of the American film by the same name released in 1956, starring Burt Lancaster and Katherine Hepburn. Vijay Tendulkar's Marathi play "Ashi Pakhare Yeti" also had a similar storyline.[1]
Nana Patekar wasn't Amol Palekar's first choice for the role he played in this film. It was Nana Patekar who approached the director and asked him why he hadn't been considered for the film's lead role. When Amol Palekar gave his reasons, Nana Patekar asked that he be given a chance to rehearse with him for a week. He said that if Amol Palekar wasn't happy with him at the end of the week, he'd walk away from the film. Amol Palekar agreed to give Nana Patekar a shot and signed him up for the role at the end of the week.
