The film's end credits began with a photo of Shivram and Anita Narre with actress Bhumi Pednekar. The caption for the photo credited the Narres for inspiring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar's characters in the film. Anita Narre had made news in 2011 when she left her husband Shivram shortly after their marriage when she found out that his home did not have a toilet. This forced Shivram to take up the issue with his village's panchayat. Impressed by Anita's stand, Sulabh International adopted her village for its "Total Cleanliness Drive" and awarded her a prize of Rs. 5 lakhs. The film's director Shree Narayan Singh met Anita and offered her a cheque of Rs. 5 lakhs and asked her to sign an agreement. Anita asked for some time before signing off. She later told the director that she wanted a share of the film's earnings instead of a fixed amount. It appeared that the film would land in legal trouble as a result of the disagreement. However, it appears that the matter was resolved and the film was released on schedule.[1][2]
Filmmaker Praveen Vyas sent a legal notice to the makers of this film alleging that they had plagiarised his docudrama "Manini" (2016). The filmmakers denied the allegation and said that the writers of the film had registered its script as far back as 2013. Writers Siddharth - Garima stated that they would consider filing a defamation suit against Praveen Vyas.[3][4]
The film was seen by some as an attempt to leverage the brand of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. Others ended up seeing it as an extension of the promotional campaign for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The film did well in India and internationally.[5][6]
Music director Vickey Prasad made his Hindi film debut with four songs in the film.
Song
Subha Ki Train - This was the debut Hindi film song of the composer duo Sachet - Parampara consisting of Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur. It was also their first song as singers. Sachet and Parampara had first met as participants of the first season of the reality TV show "The Voice" (2015). They went up to the show's finals but were eliminated eventually. They got together as a composing duo in 2016. Sachet and Parampara got married in 2020.[7]
