Trivia

    Album

  • As claimed in its opening credits, this film was "inspired by actual events". The film's idea stemmed from director Anurag Kashyap's guilt about not spending enough time with his daughter from his first marriage. Later, he drew inspiration from kidnapping cases described to him by his friend Amit Pathak who headed the UP Police's Special Task Force in Lucknow. Another real-life incident that inspired the film was that of a woman filing a case of brutality against her IAS officer husband.[1][2]
  • Anurag Kashyap did not reveal the film's script to its actors during its making. They only got the brief for the scenes they were a part of when the film was being shot. The first time the movie was revealed in its entirety to them was when it premiered at Cannes in May 2013.[3]
  • Anurag Kashyap filed a petition against the Censor Board in the Bombay High Court in November 2013 when he was asked by them to add anti-smoking disclaimers in the film. He asserted that the disclaimers reduced the film's aesthetic value and impinged on his freedom of expression. The High Court kept deferring the case since there was a similar case pending with the Supreme Court and the lower court could not rule till that case had been closed. Eventually, Kashyap gave in, included the disclaimers asked for by the Censor Board, and released the film in December 2014.[4][5]
  • Actress Tejaswini Kolhapure, who played an alcoholic in the film, used method acting in it. She consumed alcohol on the sets to get into character.[6]
  • This was actor Abir Goswami's last Hindi film. He died of a heart attack while working out on a treadmill. The film opened with an image of the actor and a message - "In memory of Abir Goswami".[7]
  • This was the debut Hindi film of the Marathi theatre and film actor Girish Kulkarni. According to Anurag Kashyap, the popular police station scene involving him, Rahul Bhat, and Vineet Kumar Singh was completely improvised. Kashyap attributed a key improvisation in the scene to Kulkarni.[8]
  • This was Rahul Bhat's first Hindi film in more than a decade. His last Hindi film prior to this was "Nayee Padosan" (2003). Bhat subjected himself to a harsh lifestyle to get into character for the film. In an interview, Anurag Kashyap said that Bhat was a muse for him since he found many similarities between the actor and his character in the film.[9][10][11]
  • Alia Bhatt made a small, uncredited cameo appearance in the film.
  • Considering the film's dark nature, Anurag Kashyap requested the parents of child artist Anshikaa Shrivastava to not show her the film. Anshikaa played the pivotal role of the kidnapped girl.[12]
  • Anurag Kashyap released a short, 5-minute film titled "Kali-Katha" on YouTube to promote the film. The short film was supposed to be a prologue to this film.[13]
