Trivia

    Album

  • This film was based on the novel "Umrao Jaan Ada" (1904) by Mirza Mohammad Hadi Ruswa. The Hindi films "Mehndi" (1958), "Zindagi Ya Toofan" (1958) and "Umrao Jaan" (1981) were also based on the same novel.[1][2][3]
  • The role of Khanum Jaan, portrayed by Shabana Azmi in this film, was played by her mother Shaukat Kaifi in the 1981 film by the same name.[4]
  • According to Abhishek Bachchan, it was during the making of this film that his relationship with Aishwarya Rai became serious. He proposed to her after this film and they got married soon after.[5]

    Song

  • Salaam Karne Ki Arzoo Hai - The tune of this song may have been inspired by the Hindi film song "Suni Jo Unke Aane Ki Aahat" ("Satyam Shivam Sundaram", 1978). It is also possible that both the songs were adapted from the same traditional tune.[6]
  • Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya (Reprise) - This was the first Hindi film solo of Anmol Malik, the daughter of music director Anu Malik. She had debuted earlier for the song "Jo Tum Kaho" ("Chhota Chetan", 1998).[7]
