Trivia

    Album

  • This film was shot and released in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. The Tamil and Telugu language films were titled "Vishwaroopam". A sequel to the film was released in 2018.[1]
  • A group called Hindu Makkal Katchi raised objections against the title of the Tamil version of the film. They demanded that the film's Sanskrit title be changed to Tamil.[2]
  • This is one of the first Indian films to plan a Direct-To-Home (DTH) release before the theatrical release. However, producer Kamal Haasan's plan did not materialise when distributors and theatre owners objected to it and threatened to not show the film if it were released on DTH first. Kamal stuck to his stand first but eventually gave in and released the film on DTH a week after the theatrical release.[3]
  • While the film faced many challenges in the run-up to its release, the most serious issue stemmed from the objections raised by some Muslim groups. Kamal Haasan arranged special screenings for the groups to assuage their concerns and convince them that the film did not intend to hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community. Even after the screenings, the Muslim groups insisted on the deletion of several scenes in the film. Concerned by this confrontation, the Tamil Nadu government banned the film in the state. A court battle ensued between the film's producers and the state government. At one point, it looked like the ban would be overturned but the government prevailed eventually. The ban in Tamil Nadu triggered a spate of bans in other territories. A frustrated Kamal Haasan called a press conference and threatened to leave Tamil Nadu and move to a secular state or country that would accommodate his art. The film fraternity rallied around him but the matter was resolved only when he agreed to mute seven scenes in the film. The ban was lifted and the film was finally released.[4]
