Trivia

    Album

  • Gulzar had originally written the Oscar-winning song "Jai Ho" ("Slumdog Millionaire", 2009) for this film. Director Subhash Ghai thought that the song's lyrics were too refined for this film and asked him to write another song instead. A.R. Rahman then sought Ghai's permission to use the song in "Slumdog Millionaire" (2009). When Ghai agreed, Gulzar made a few changes to the lyrics and Rahman then recorded it. In 2024, a controversy broke out when filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma said in an interview with Film Companion that Rahman and Ghai had a bitter fight over this song. Ghai was unhappy with the composer for delaying the delivery of this song. According to Varma, Rahman finally set up a meeting to discuss a tune but when Ghai showed up, he found only Sukhwinder Singh there. Singh apparently composed the tune of "Jai Ho" at that meeting. A dismayed Ghai called Rahman who was on his way to the meeting from the airport. Following an angry exchange of words, Rahman told Ghai that he was paying him not for his tunes but for his name. A miffed Ghai told Rahman that the tune did not work for him. When the Hindustan Times asked Sukhwinder Singh about Ram Gopal Varma's claim, the singer refuted his story and said that the song was A.R. Rahman's composition.[1][2][3][4]
