Born in Kolkata in 1952, Ajoy Chakrabarty is a Hindustani classical musician from the Patiala gharana. In 1990 he won the National Award for the Best Male Playback Singer for his rendition of the Bengali song “Dolo O Champa Bone” in the movie “Chhandaneer” (1989). He was conferred the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 2011.
His father, Ajit Chakrabarty was a music composer and music educationalist. His younger brother, Sanjay Chakrabarty is also a music therapist and composer. Likewise, his daughter, Kaushiki Chakrabarty is also a Hindustani singer. Ajoy first trained under his father from the age of three. His other teachers include Pannalal Samantha and Kanai Das Baragi till he became the disciple of Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, son of legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
In the film music industry, he has worked on both the Tamil and Hindi versions of Kamal Hassan’s controversial film “Hey Ram” (2000) where he sang “Isaiyil Thodanguthamma/Har Koi Samjhe” under the music direction of Illaiyaraja. In 2001, he sang Uttam Singh’s composition “Aan Milo Sajna” along with Parveen Sultana in the film “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha”.
He won the Kumar Gandharva Award in 1993, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2000 and the Alva’s Viraasat Award in 2012.
