Her most acclaimed novel, Pinjar, was adapted into an eponymous movie in 2003 by Chandra Prakash Dwivedi. The movie contains three of her poems “Charkha Chalati Maa”, “Waris Shah Nu” and “Sita Ko Dekhe” set to music by Uttam Singh. In the 1975 movie “Kadambari” she penned the lines of the song “Ambar Ki Ek Paak Suraahi” rendered by eternal Asha Bhosle under the music direction of Vilayat Ali Khan. Renowned lyricist Gulzar released an audio album “Amrita Pritam” in 2007 which had Amrita’s poems recited by him.

She was 86 years old and living in Delhi when she died in her sleep on 31 October 2005.
