Avinash Vyas was a lyricist and music director who was active for over four decades from the 1940s to 1980s. While he worked in many Hindi films, he was primarily known for his work in Gujarati films. In fact, he dominated the Gujarati music scene for many years and won several state awards for Best Music Direction and Best Lyrics.
Born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, he moved to Bombay in his late 20s. He learnt music under the tutelage of Ustad Alauddin Khan and began his career as a composer along with his friend, tabla maestro Alla Rakha in the movie "Mahasati Ansuya" in 1943. It was only later, when his Hindi film career had taken off, that he started composing for Gujarati films and established himself there.
