Bulleh Shah (1680–1757), born as Abdullah Shah in Uch, Punjab, was a poet, humanist and philosopher with faith in Sufism. His poetry has been used extensively in the Hindi film industry. 2004 saw Rabbi Shergill popularise “Bulla Ki Jaana”, a metaphysical poem by Bulleh Shah

“Chaiyya Chaiyya” (“Dil Se”, 1998) and “Ranjha Ranjha” (“Raavan”, 2010) have used modified version of Bulleh Shah’s verses. In 2008, “Bulle Shah, O Yaar Mere” was a song in the soundtrack of Nasurruddin Shah-starrer “A Wednesday”. Earlier, in 2007, the Pakistani production “Khuda Ke Liye” featured one of his poems “Bandeya Ho”. He died in 1757 and is buried at Kasur, Pakistan.
