Baba Farid (also known as Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Masud Ganjshakar) was a 12th century Sufi preacher and a poet. 116 hymns from his work have been included in the Guru Granth Sahib by Guru Nanak himself.
He is credited with using Punjabi language for literary purposes for the first time. It was till then considered a basic folk language. Revered by Muslims and Hindus alike, Baba Farid is one of the fifteen Sikh Bhagats.
He died in 1280 AD at Pakpattan, Pakistan. Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya built a marble shrine for him there. To this day, his followers flock the shrine to pay homage and participate in the daily qawwalis.
